F*********CK Cancer!!!
We have known for a long time now that Roger has terminal brain cancer, but we have been successfully “living anyways.” For the past 16 months, Roger has beaten the odds. The newly FDA approved cancer medication he was taking had successfully stopped the cancer from growing. We knew all along that this medication was not a cure, but a tool to buy more time. And we have been able to revel in the opportunity to live and play despite his diagnosis. We have had an amazing year

Oh Canada!!
It’s been awhile since we last posted and we have not driven our trikes off a cliff! We are still here in Eastern Ontario and our plans took a bit of a detour. Well, Roger’s plans took a detour and Wendi got want she has always wanted - a cottage on a lake! We bought a cottage!!!!!! We were just casually looking and found a gem. Wendi cried when she first walked on the property. It was pouring rain and it didn’t matter a bit… she could tell that this property was the one.

Week 2: Living on the Neurology Unit
After spending a week in the ICU, we finally get to move down to the neurology unit at St. Charles. Roger needs to stay here to stabilize enough before he gets to go to inpatient rehab. A huge thank you to Packy for spending so many evenings with Roger so I could go home and parent. So much progress this week: Food!!!! He no longer has an NG feeding tube and is eating a normal diet. No more ground up "cat food" soft diet. He even ate steak today without any problems (hospita

Wheels Are Rollin’, Finally!
Tuesday September 15th - Friday September 18th We are off!!! Ok, we have put over 3000 miles on the camper and we just, finally, got the trikes down from the racks, cleaned the chains, cleaned the seats, and got them ready to ride! It’s pretty sad that it took us this long to get our butts in those seats, but we’ve been we’ve been busy (the subject of a subsequent post!) and I’ve been injured, which was the subject of the last post! After spending a few hard earned days recup

Epic Self Reliance!
Wednesday, September 2 to Friday September 4, 2026 Written by Roger Sunset at Charlseton Lake before dinner!! Well, I’m learning! On several fronts at once! Based on a few factors, this college move-in season I was uninvited from the party, and willingly so! Last time I did this (my oldest moved in three years ago) I’m not sure I was as helpful as I could have been, and given my left handedness now, I’d be useless in the face of the evil Ikea! Truthfully, I’m not sure I could

Reconnecting Neurons
Day 5: I continue to document Roger’s progress not only to share his journey with those that want to follow along, but to also preserve this story for him when he is ready to see it. I know that there will be challenging times ahead when he is frustrated by his disabilities and lack of progress. Hopefully this journal will help remind him of where he started and how much he has achieved one day at a time. Today brought a few important milestones: Roger was able to walk down t

Pulling Through
Day 3: What an inspirational day. Roger is such a fighter and hard worker as everyone who knows him will attest. He has made sooooo much progress in the last 12 hours. He had a routine CT scan this morning and no further bleeding. The brain swelling seems to have stabilized. Today, he has been easier to rouse. When he is awake, he is lucid and alert. He knows who we all are and where he is. What a relief to have him coming back to us. He clearly wanted to know what was happen

Week 1 - We Are Off!!!
Day 1: Lone Tree Campground on the John Day River, Oregon The preparations are done and we are on the road… finally. We got underway at 4pm after 100 last minute pit stops. We drove 3 hours and landed in a perfect spot!! Wendi picked a fabulous campground on the John Day River before it meets the Columbia River. We strolled down to the river, a sliver of its former self in the late August heat. But it was beautiful nonetheless. Something is melting off the both of us… Stres

The Night Everything Changed
March 29,2024 To read a a detailed account of the first few hours of Roger’s stroke, go to the “Our Story” webpage. This entry picks that story up when we arrive at the Intensive Care Unit. The first night in the ICU was brutal. We had no idea if Roger was going to make it through the night. We knew that he was actively bleeding deep in his basal ganglia. This is a region that neurosurgeons do not want to venture because it would likely kill him. So the only tool we had w
